It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Wiebke Brix as the new Head of Art at Leonard Joel. Wiebke brings a wealth of experience, passion for art and expertise to the role, and will be a valuable addition to our team.
Wiebke holds a PhD in Fine Art and has extensive experience in the gallery sector, as well as experience in project management and marketing.
Wiebke completed a master’s of studio arts with honours at Sydney College of the Arts under the influential contemporary Australian painter and sculptor Lindy Lee. Wiebke was then awarded a scholarship to complete a PhD in Fine Arts at Monash University in Melbourne, focusing on sculpture and installation art.
After completing her studies, she commenced her career at Scott Livesey Galleries as Gallery Manager, working with important Australian artists such as Stelarc, Joshua Yeldham and Bruce Armstrong. It was through director Scott Livesey that she was first exposed to the secondary art market and developed an interest in the field.
Wiebke then transitioned into communication design as an account manager and creative, focusing on strategic planning, branding, and digital strategy. In this role, she developed her leadership and project management skills by effectively managing client accounts and implementing strategies for online presence growth.
In 2022, Wiebke decided to return to her adoration for the arts and took on the role of Art Curator at Alcaston Gallery. Wiebke’s tenure at Alcaston Gallery, known for its expertise in First Nations Art, has provided her with valuable insights into the indigenous art market.
Leonard Joel’s Art Department offers expertise and extensive market knowledge in traditional, modern, international, and contemporary art. Wiebke’s gallery experience, complemented by her digital marketing background, will represent a welcome enhancement of Leonard Joel’s Fine Art offerings in its new Melbourne site.
Wiebke says, “I am honoured to be joining Leonard Joel as the Head of Art, an auction house with over 100 years of history and a team of highly specialised professionals led by Chairman John Albrecht. I am looking forward to working in the beautiful new purpose-built premises in Hawthorn, to meeting vendors and collectors, and to continue the rich culture of curated fine art auction offerings alongside my team of art specialists.”
Please join us in welcoming Wiebke Brix to Leonard Joel. We are excited about the expertise and passion she brings to her role and look forward to the future of our Art Department under her leadership.
Wiebke and Georgina Lewis, the interim Head of Art, will be working alongside each other for a short period to ensure a smooth handover, with Georgina finishing as interim Head of Art at the end of March. On this occasion, we also wish to express our gratitude to Georgina for her valued contribution and management of the department in the interim period.
