Leonard Joel

Decades ago the French recognised that artisanship and craftsmanship was also the preserve of fashion. Thus began the collecting market for high quality vintage leather ware and accessories from the world’s great fashion houses. Amanda Saini, of our Luxury department, proved the point on Saturday September 12th with the sale of lot 100, a Birkin handbag by Hermes, for $9,150 (IBP); a price that places it very much within the serious collecting realm! Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada also dominated proceedings with four out of the top ten results going to Chanel. Of the more charming accessories sold was a lot 151, a costume Gripoix pendant by Chanel, that  realised a modest but pleasing $854 (IBP).

bthrahtraThe quarterly auction offered 256 lots across every imaginable luxury area and realised an extraordinary $90,100 (IBP), firmly positioning Leonard Joel as the largest market for the auction sale of luxury property in Australia. Amanda Saini, who curates our Luxury auctions, commented: “The wonderful thing about this category is that it resonates with the new collector, it is a subject matter that is universal, fashion and many of the pieces they are acquiring are not only collectable now but will be in the future – this market is now very well established and is here to stay!”

We are now seeking high-end leather ware and accessories for our next quarterly luxury auction.
